Backroads Confessions - Old Roads | Pat James

“The world feels a lot bigger now than it used to…

Even if you grew up in a city, I think when you look back, everything just felt closer… simpler somehow.

I grew up in a small town—Aurora, Ontario. My parents moved there the year I was born, opened a pizza place… and we lived right above it.

So for ten years, that town was my whole world.

I knew every street… every shortcut… every place that felt important.

The band shell where I first heard live music…
the park when the fair came through…
and this little video store where I used to rent the same movie over and over again… to the point where my mom actually had to call them and tell them to stop renting it to me.

And years later, I went back…
and the guy behind the counter recognized me before I even finished asking for it.

That’s when it hit me…

Those roads… they always used to lead me somewhere that felt like home.

And now…

I’m not sure I recognize them anymore.

This is Old Roads.”
