Backroads Confessions - 59 Deville | Pat James

“I love driving…

There’s just something about getting in the truck, grabbing a coffee, putting on some music…

It’s like putting on a suit of armour.
Feels like it can take you anywhere you wanna go.

I don’t know if any of you feel that way… but I’ll drive just for the sake of driving.

I think that started for me with a car we had parked in our backyard growing up… a ’59 Deville.

It ran… not well… but it ran.

I remember sitting in the passenger seat with my dad, steering from his lap… imagining one day that car would be mine.

I was about eight years old… dreaming about where it would take me…
ghost hunts… chasing vampires… road trips to places I’d never seen before…

Never did get that car running.

I remember the day the flatbed came and took it away… never saw it again.

But I think something stuck…

My dad used to pick me up, throw me in the car… we’d go grab an apple pie, something to eat… and just drive.

No destination… just the road.

Wherever we ended up, we’d have a picnic, watch the sunset…
then drive home listening to old ’50s and ’60s music.

I think that’s where it all started for me.

This is 59 Deville.
