The Backroads Project: How I Got Here | Pat James

Over the past little while, I’ve been working on something called The Backroads Project.

At first, it started pretty simply.

I wanted to revisit the songs from I’d Like To Leave in the most honest way possible — just me, an acoustic guitar, and the stories that eventually became the music.

But somewhere along the way, it turned into something bigger than that.

The Backroads Project became less about “content” and more about documenting the emotional road behind the songs.

Not just the finished recordings.
Not just polished versions.

But the memories.
The conversations.
The late-night drives.
The fears.
The relationships.
The mistakes.
The small towns.
The moments that stayed with me long after they happened.

BACKROADS SESSIONS

The Backroads Sessions are stripped-back acoustic performances filmed in a more intimate, cinematic setting.

These aren’t meant to be simplified versions of the songs.

In a lot of ways, they’re actually the emotional origin point.

Before the full-band recordings.
Before the production.
Before the studio versions became what they are now.

Just the songs in the form they were first written.

Raw, quiet, imperfect, and honest.

BACKROADS CONFESSIONS

The Backroads Confessions are short spoken reflections connected to the songs.

Some are about where the songs came from.
Some are about memories.
Some are about things I didn’t fully understand until years later.

The goal wasn’t to over-explain the music.

I wanted them to feel more like remembering things out loud.

BACKROADS OBSERVATIONS

Backroads Observations are smaller moments captured while moving through everyday life.

Thoughts while driving.
Things noticed at a gas station.
A line that comes to mind sitting at a red light.
A memory triggered by an old building or a familiar road.

Not every moment becomes a song.

Sometimes it’s just an observation worth holding onto for a minute.

BACKROAD DISPATCH

The Backroad Dispatch is a place for the more personal side of the project.

A road journal of sorts.

Early ideas.
Photos from the road.
Stories.
Unreleased thoughts.
Updates from shows and travels.
Fragments of songs and memories before they become something bigger.

Less polished.
More immediate.
More like riding along for the drive.

WHY “BACKROADS”?

For me, the road has always represented something bigger than driving.

It’s memory.
Movement.
Escape.
Loneliness.
Freedom.
Reflection.
Change.

A lot of these songs were written while moving through different stages of life, and looking back now, the road became the thread connecting all of it.

The Backroads Project became a way of documenting that journey honestly.

Not polished.
Not perfect.
Just real.
